OpenAI is making a full-length AI movie, and it’s set to debut at Cannes

OpenAI is stepping into the world of film production by utilizing its advanced tools and computational power to create a full-length animated feature titled "Critterz." Scheduled for a global release next year, this ambitious project is described by The Wall Street Journal as an adventure revolving around forest creatures facing disruption from an outsider. Chad Nelson, a creative expert at OpenAI, is the mastermind behind this initiative. He previously created a short film with the same title using the DALL-E 2 image generation model. For this full-length version, Nelson has collaborated with production companies based in both London and Los Angeles, with plans to unveil the film at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in May of next year. The goal of OpenAI is to produce "Critterz" more swiftly and affordably than traditional Hollywood studios, aiming for a production timeline of approximately nine months instead of the typical three years. The project is being produced by Vertigo Films, a London-based company, alongside Native Foreign, which specializes in integrating AI with conventional video production techniques. Funding is provided by Federation Studios, Vertigo's parent company, which has implemented a profit-sharing model for the film's crew, consisting of around 30 individuals. The script for "Critterz" has been penned by team members who also contributed to the writing of "Paddington in Peru." Production is already underway, with voice casting for the characters set to be finalized in the coming weeks. From OpenAI's perspective, the success of "Critterz" could serve as a significant demonstration of AI's potential in creating compelling cinematic content and further promote the technology's integration within Hollywood. "OpenAI can articulate the capabilities of its tools endlessly, but actual implementation makes a stronger impact," Nelson remarked, emphasizing the importance of real-world case studies. Major entertainment firms like Netflix are also exploring AI's role in filmmaking, recently establishing guidelines for creators, while companies like Disney and Universal have taken legal action against AI firms for copyright infringements.
