OpenAI is set to venture into the realm of artificial intelligence chip design, collaborating with the renowned semiconductor company Broadcom. This strategic move is aimed at decreasing the organization's dependence on Nvidia, which currently dominates the AI hardware market with its accelerators. According to reports, the initial units of these new AI chips are anticipated to roll out as soon as next year. However, they will initially be utilized within OpenAI’s own infrastructure rather than being available for external sale. If this initiative proves successful, it could position OpenAI as a formidable competitor to Nvidia in the lucrative AI hardware sector. Broadcom's CEO, Hock Tan, confirmed during an investor call that the company is actively working with clients to develop AI accelerators. Although he refrained from disclosing the names of specific partners, he did mention that one client recently placed significant production orders, leading Broadcom to revise its revenue forecasts for the fiscal year 2026. "Last quarter, one of these prospects released production orders to Broadcom. We now expect the outlook for fiscal 2026 AI revenue to improve significantly from what we had indicated last quarter," Tan stated. In addition to its chip development efforts, OpenAI is preparing to launch an AI-driven job platform next year. This initiative aims to connect employers with professionals who possess AI skills. Furthermore, the organization plans to introduce a certification program designed to help individuals effectively integrate AI into their work. This program is being developed in partnership with various organizations, including Walmart, the largest private employer in the United States. OpenAI aims to certify 10 million Americans by 2030. This announcement was made during a White House task force meeting on AI and education, which included prominent technology leaders such as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Alphabet's Sundar Pichai. Following this session, OpenAI confirmed that Altman would engage in further discussions with senior administration officials later that day.
