OpenAI says U.S. needs more power to stay ahead of China in AI: 'Electrons are the new oil'

In a recent statement, OpenAI highlighted the urgent need for the United States to significantly increase its investment in energy infrastructure to maintain a competitive edge over China in the field of artificial intelligence. The organization has been actively pursuing partnerships for ambitious projects that will demand substantial energy resources. As the nation’s electric grid faces mounting pressures, OpenAI emphasizes that electricity transcends mere utility; it is a vital strategic resource essential for establishing the AI frameworks that will uphold the U.S.'s technological leadership. In a blog post released on Tuesday, the company stated, "Electricity is not simply a utility. It's a strategic asset that is critical to building the AI infrastructure that will secure our leadership on the most consequential technology since electricity itself." OpenAI has submitted an extensive 11-page document to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, advocating for the U.S. to aim for the construction of 100 gigawatts of new energy capacity annually. For context, a gigawatt represents a significant amount of power, with 10 gigawatts equating to the yearly energy consumption of approximately 8 million American households, according to an analysis by CNBC referencing Energy Information Administration data. The report pointed out a stark contrast in energy capacity growth, noting that while China expanded its power capacity by 429 gigawatts last year, the U.S. managed only 51 gigawatts. OpenAI warned that this growing discrepancy is creating an "electron gap," jeopardizing the U.S.'s position in the global landscape. "Electrons are the new oil," they remarked, underscoring the critical role of energy in future technological advancements.
