Sam Altman says first prototype of ChatGPT-powered AI device is 'jaw-dropping'

OpenAI has been stirring excitement in the tech community following its acquisition of Jony Ive's design startup, hinting at groundbreaking new hardware developments. While the company has acknowledged its work on ChatGPT-integrated products, specifics regarding their release date and features have remained sparse. In a recent discussion with Emerson Collective, both Ive and OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, confirmed that they are developing several AI-powered devices. They anticipate that the initial products could be unveiled to consumers within the next two years, projecting a potential launch around 2027. Altman expressed his enthusiasm about the progress, stating, "We have the first prototypes. I can’t believe how jaw-dropping good the work is and how exciting it is." Altman drew a comparison to the iPhone, which he described as the "crowning achievement of consumer products." He criticized contemporary devices for creating a chaotic digital environment, akin to a bustling Times Square that constantly vies for user attention. The vision for the new devices is to transform this experience by developing technology that intuitively understands user needs, knowing when to engage and when to step back. "Imagine a device that allows you to enjoy peace and calm, like sitting in a beautiful cabin by a lake, something that simply isn’t achievable in the pre-AI landscape," he explained. Regarding design, Ive emphasized his preference for simplicity and user-friendly sophistication. He stated, "I love solutions that seem almost naive in their simplicity, yet are incredibly intelligent and sophisticated, inviting users to interact with them effortlessly." Previous reports indicated that OpenAI is exploring a variety of hardware options, including a potential smart speaker without a display, smart glasses, a digital voice recorder, and a wearable pin. Notably, OpenAI has partnered with Luxshare, a significant assembler for Apple products, to facilitate large-scale manufacturing of these devices. Additionally, they are in talks with another assembler, Goertek, to provide components such as speaker modules for the upcoming launches.
