OpenAI launches Sora for Android devices

On Tuesday, OpenAI announced the launch of its Sora application, specifically designed for generating AI-driven videos on Android devices. This expansion follows the app's initial release for Apple users back in September, marking a significant step in making this innovative tool accessible to a broader audience. Sora is now available for download on the Google Play store, catering to users across several countries, including the U.S., Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. The app has already achieved remarkable success, gaining 1 million downloads within just five days of its debut and dominating the Apple App Store for nearly three weeks. Currently, Sora ranks as the fifth most popular free app on Apple’s platform, trailing behind Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s own ChatGPT, which sits at the top. According to Bill Peebles, the head of Sora at OpenAI, there are plans to extend the app's availability to European users in the near future. Sora enables users to create videos from written prompts, which can then be shared on a communal feed reminiscent of TikTok. Originally introduced as an invite-only platform, Sora is now open to all users for a limited time, as announced in a recent post on X by OpenAI. This move signifies OpenAI's commitment to expanding the reach of its groundbreaking technology in the creative landscape.
