OpenAI has made headlines with the announcement of Sora 2, an advanced audio and video generation model that acts as the successor to last year’s Sora. In tandem with this model, the tech giant has introduced a companion social application called Sora, designed for users to create and share videos in a TikTok-like fashion. The Sora app allows users to generate personalized videos featuring themselves and friends, showcased through an algorithm-driven feed. Although the app is currently invite-only, OpenAI has presented exciting examples of its capabilities. Sora 2 significantly enhances realism by adhering to the laws of physics, as seen in its public demonstrations that include a variety of activities like beach volleyball, skateboarding tricks, and gymnastics. OpenAI's blog emphasized the advancements of Sora 2, highlighting how it improves upon previous models that often distorted reality to meet text prompts. For instance, while earlier versions might have shown a basketball teleporting into the hoop after a missed shot, Sora 2 accurately depicts the ball rebounding off the backboard instead. A notable feature of the Sora app is the “cameos” function, which permits users to insert themselves into Sora-generated scenes. To use this feature, individuals must upload a one-time video and audio clip to verify their identity and likeness. Users can also share their cameos with friends, enabling collaborative video generation that includes multiple participants. OpenAI believes that a social platform centered around this “cameos” feature will allow users to fully appreciate the innovations of Sora 2. Currently, the Sora iOS app is available for download in the U.S. and Canada, with plans for rapid expansion into other regions. While the Sora platform is still in its invite-only phase, ChatGPT Pro subscribers will be able to access the Sora 2 Pro model without needing an invitation. Users can share their generated videos within the app, creating a dynamic feed similar to those found on TikTok or Instagram Reels. In a competitive landscape, Meta recently introduced a video feed named “Vibes” within its Meta AI app, prompting OpenAI to focus on its unique offerings. The Sora app will personalize content recommendations based on user activity, location, engagement history, and even ChatGPT interactions, although users have the option to disable this feature. To ensure the safety of younger users, the Sora app includes parental controls through ChatGPT, allowing parents to manage various settings, including scroll limits and direct messaging permissions. However, the efficacy of these features largely depends on parental technical skills. Initially, the Sora app will be free, aimed at encouraging exploration of its features. OpenAI has indicated that monetization may come in the form of fees for generating extra videos during peak demand. As the launch of a social platform unfolds, OpenAI will need to implement robust user safety measures to address concerns that have plagued its ChatGPT platform. While users can retract access to their likeness, the potential for misuse remains a concern. Trusting someone with access to one's AI likeness can lead to the generation of misleading content that could cause personal harm. The issue of non-consensual AI-generated videos is a pressing challenge, underscoring the need for clear regulations governing platform responsibility.
