In a significant move to enhance user safety, OpenAI has announced plans to introduce parental controls for ChatGPT. This initiative comes in response to several troubling incidents involving users in crisis, prompting the company to take decisive action to protect vulnerable individuals. The introduction of these controls aims to address concerns raised after alarming reports of the AI assistant's failure to appropriately respond to users expressing suicidal thoughts or experiencing mental health challenges. OpenAI expressed its commitment to this cause through a blog post, stating, "This work has already been underway, but we want to proactively preview our plans for the next 120 days, so you won’t need to wait for launches to see where we’re headed." These parental controls will allow parents to link their accounts to their teens' ChatGPT accounts, which are accessible to users aged 13 and older. Through email invitations, parents can set age-appropriate behavior rules for the AI, manage features such as chat history, and receive alerts if the system detects signs of acute distress in their child. Additionally, these updates will build on previously established features, including in-app reminders that encourage breaks during long sessions, which were introduced in August. This safety initiative follows high-profile cases that have raised concerns over ChatGPT's interaction with at-risk users. Notably, a lawsuit was filed by the parents of a teenager who died by suicide after extensive interactions with the AI, which included numerous mentions of self-harm. OpenAI is collaborating with an Expert Council on Well-Being and AI to guide these new safety measures, aiming to create a comprehensive strategy that promotes user well-being while interacting with AI technologies. The council's role includes defining well-being metrics, establishing priorities, and designing future safeguards, including the newly announced parental controls.
