OpenAI launches standalone Codex app for Apple computers

On Monday, OpenAI introduced a new standalone application for its AI-driven coding assistant, Codex, specifically designed for Apple computer users. This innovative app is currently available to all ChatGPT users and features an intuitive interface that acts as a central hub, enabling software developers to efficiently oversee multiple AI agents simultaneously. AI agents represent tools capable of autonomously performing tasks like coding on behalf of the user. The demand for AI coding assistants has surged over the past year, with OpenAI reporting that over a million developers utilized Codex in just the last month. Originally launched in April and made widely accessible in October, the Codex app represents OpenAI's strategic initiative to capture user interest and market share from competitors like Anthropic and Cursor, which also cater to developers. During a press briefing, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed enthusiasm for the Codex app, calling it "the most loved internal product we've ever had." He shared his personal excitement, stating, "I've been staying up late at night with excitement, building all sorts of things myself." The app allows agents to operate in distinct threads organized by project, enabling users to track changes made by the agents within those threads. This feature facilitates parallel processing, making it easier for developers to collaborate with AI on ongoing projects. Additionally, the Codex app includes a diverse library of "skills," such as image generation, allowing agents to tackle tasks beyond mere code creation. While Codex access is typically included with ChatGPT subscriptions—including Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, or Edu tiers—OpenAI has announced that the app will also be available to free users and those on its budget-friendly Go subscription for a limited time. This means all ChatGPT users can utilize Codex across various platforms, including the newly launched app for Apple computers. To further incentivize existing Codex users, OpenAI is temporarily increasing rate limits for its paid plans, enhancing the overall user experience. "As fast as I can type in new ideas, that is the limit of what can get built," Altman noted, highlighting the exciting possibilities ahead as developers leverage this cutting-edge tool.
