ChatGPT finally offers $100/month Pro plan

OpenAI has officially launched a long-awaited $100 monthly subscription plan aimed at power users, as announced on Thursday. Previously, users had limited options, including a free plan that now incorporates ads, an $8/month Go plan (also ad-supported), and a $20/month Plus plan that is free of advertisements. Interestingly, the highest tier previously listed at $200 per month is no longer mentioned on OpenAI’s pricing page, although the company has confirmed to TechCrunch that it remains available. The newly introduced Pro plan is designed specifically to enhance the daily utilization of ChatGPT's coding tool, Codex. With the Pro plan, users can expect a significant boost, offering five times more Codex capabilities compared to the Plus plan. This strategic pricing shift appears to be a direct response to competition, particularly targeting Anthropic, which has maintained a $100/month option for its Claude model. An OpenAI representative explained, "The new $100 Pro Tier is intended to provide developers with enhanced coding capabilities for their investment, especially during intense work sessions where performance limitations are critical." They further elaborated that Codex offers more coding power per dollar than Claude Code, particularly evident during active coding tasks. For those eager to test the new Pro plan, OpenAI is currently offering even higher Codex limits until May 31. However, users should be mindful that these generous limits may not persist indefinitely, as none of the plans provide unlimited usage. The existing $200 plan, however, still boasts 20 times the limits of the Plus plan, supporting demanding workflows across multiple projects. Both the Plus and Pro plans come with the same essential features, with the primary distinction being the rate limits imposed. OpenAI also reported a remarkable surge in Codex usage, with over 3 million users engaging with the platform weekly, marking a fivefold increase in just three months and a 70% rise month-over-month.
