In a strategic move to address the overwhelming demand from users, OpenAI has announced that it will now allow Sora users to purchase additional video generations, beyond the existing limit of 30 free videos per day. This development signifies a shift in how the company plans to monetize its popular video generation platform. Bill Peebles, the head of Sora, shared insights on X about the decision, emphasizing the company's surprise at how extensively power users are engaging with the platform. 'We initially believed that 30 free generations per day would suffice, but we've realized that our assumptions were off base,' Peebles stated. 'This change enables our professional creators to access more content as needed.' Starting today, users will have the option to buy ten extra video generations for $4. Despite this new monetization strategy, free users can still generate up to 100 videos daily, although this may vary based on the complexity of their chosen configurations. Peebles reassured users that the current free limit will remain in place for the time being. Sora, which leverages OpenAI's Sora 2 model, has quickly risen to popularity, becoming the second most downloaded free app on Apple's App Store, just behind ChatGPT. In addition to the monetization announcement, OpenAI recently introduced cameo characters, allowing users to create AI-generated content featuring pets and objects. However, Peebles warned that the free video generation limits may need to be adjusted in the future due to limitations in computing resources. 'As we grow, we may need to reduce the free generation limits to ensure sustainability,' he noted, while also promising transparency during any upcoming changes. For now, OpenAI has relaxed the sign-up requirements for Sora in the US and Canada, allowing users to join without an invitation code. Yet, the app's journey has not been without challenges. OpenAI is currently facing a lawsuit from Cameo, the service known for personalized celebrity videos, over the use of the term 'Cameos' in Sora's features. OpenAI maintains that the term cannot be exclusively owned by any entity. Additionally, concerns regarding intellectual property and the potential for misuse of video generation capabilities have prompted OpenAI to limit certain content types. CEO Sam Altman has expressed a commitment to ensure that Sora and similar platforms do not lead to addiction, highlighting the company's proactive approach to managing user engagement and experience.
