OpenAI launches Study Mode in ChatGPT

On Tuesday, OpenAI introduced a groundbreaking feature called Study Mode within ChatGPT, designed to foster critical thinking among students rather than merely providing answers. With this new mode activated, ChatGPT will engage users by posing questions to assess their comprehension. In certain instances, it may withhold direct answers, prompting students to interact more deeply with the material. The rollout of Study Mode begins for users logged into ChatGPT’s Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans. OpenAI plans to extend this feature to its Edu subscribers—primarily students whose educational institutions have purchased access—over the coming weeks. This initiative comes as OpenAI seeks to address concerns regarding the use of ChatGPT in educational settings. Research has indicated that while ChatGPT can act as a valuable tutoring resource, it may also hinder critical thinking abilities. A study published in June highlighted that individuals utilizing ChatGPT for essay writing demonstrated lower brain activity compared to those relying on Google Search or traditional methods. The launch of ChatGPT in 2022 initially triggered apprehension among educators, leading to bans on generative AI in numerous American schools. However, by 2023, several of these restrictions were lifted as educators acknowledged the growing presence of AI in students' lives. With Study Mode, OpenAI aims to transition ChatGPT into a more effective educational tool, enhancing the learning experience. In a similar vein, Anthropic introduced Learning Mode for its AI chatbot Claude in April. Despite its potential, Study Mode has limitations; students can easily revert to the standard mode for quick answers. Leah Belsky, OpenAI’s VP of Education, mentioned in a TechCrunch briefing that the company does not currently provide mechanisms for parents or educators to enforce Study Mode. However, there may be considerations for developing administrative or parental controls in the future. Ultimately, the success of Study Mode relies on students' commitment to learning, rather than simply completing assignments. OpenAI views this feature as a foundational step towards enhancing educational experiences with generative AI, promising to share further insights on its impact in the educational landscape soon.
