OpenAI brings 'Study Mode' to ChatGPT to promote learning instead of copying answers

OpenAI has introduced an exciting new feature for ChatGPT known as Study Mode, aimed at transforming the way students engage with learning. This innovative addition encourages learners to truly understand concepts rather than merely copying answers. In Study Mode, ChatGPT adopts the role of an insightful tutor, prompting users with questions and guiding them toward the right answers while breaking down complex ideas into manageable parts. This approach mirrors the Socratic method, facilitated by advanced AI technology. The feature employs a 'scaffolded' learning technique, gradually introducing information as users build their understanding, thus avoiding overwhelming them with excessive details too quickly. The primary objective of Study Mode is to foster critical thinking, enhance comprehension, and improve long-term retention, rather than just providing quick solutions. OpenAI emphasized that they aim to support deeper learning experiences. Notably, this feature is available to all OpenAI account holders, with ChatGPT Edu users set to gain access soon. Developed in collaboration with educators, scientists, and experts in pedagogy, Study Mode utilizes custom system instructions instead of a new model. This allows for flexibility in testing and refining the feature based on user feedback, although it may lead to some inconsistencies in conversations during this phase. In addition to tutoring-like support, Study Mode provides personalized feedback, enabling users to monitor their progress and sharpen their understanding over time. OpenAI is already working on further enhancements, including goal-setting tools, increased personalization, and progress tracking through conversations. With ChatGPT being widely used by students globally, the introduction of Study Mode comes at a critical time as schools and parents seek to ensure that AI tools are utilized for genuine learning rather than as shortcuts. Although there are currently no mechanisms for parents or educators to lock students into Study Mode, OpenAI’s VP of Education, Leah Belsky, indicated that such controls may be explored in the future.
