OpenAI has officially rolled out a comprehensive app store dedicated to ChatGPT, allowing users to explore and utilize a variety of applications. The AI company, headquartered in San Francisco, has also introduced its Apps SDK, enabling developers to create unique 'chat-native experiences' that integrate context and actionable features directly within ChatGPT. In a blog post, OpenAI highlighted that these applications enhance ChatGPT interactions by introducing new contexts and allowing users to perform tasks such as ordering groceries, transforming outlines into slide presentations, or searching for rental properties. The company advised developers to focus on creating apps that are specific, user-friendly, and deliver tangible value by facilitating real-world tasks initiated through conversation or by crafting entirely new AI-driven experiences within the ChatGPT framework. Furthermore, OpenAI announced a change in terminology regarding connectors that facilitate data integration from external websites, such as Google Drive. These will now be categorized as apps. The updated definition encompasses both interactive user interface apps and connectors that enable users to search and reference information seamlessly within ChatGPT. OpenAI reassured users that existing functionalities would remain intact, ensuring that previously activated connectors and company knowledge will continue to operate as usual. Users can access the ChatGPT App Store, officially termed the 'app directory,' through chatgpt.com/apps or directly from the tools menu on the ChatGPT platform. Developers are also encouraged to utilize deep links from other platforms to direct users to their specific app pages within the directory. Distinct from conventional app stores like Google Play or Apple's App Store, the ChatGPT app directory operates within the ChatGPT interface. Users can call upon these apps simply by mentioning their names. OpenAI is also working on integrating relevant and useful apps directly into conversations by analyzing conversational context, app usage patterns, and user preferences. In addition to the app rollout, OpenAI is investigating monetization strategies for the applications, which may include the sale of digital goods. Developers will need to have their applications reviewed through the OpenAI Developer Platform, with the first batch of approved apps set to be launched gradually in the coming new year. Apps that comply with quality and safety standards will be eligible for publication in the app directory, and those that resonate well with users may receive enhanced visibility in the directory or recommendations from ChatGPT in future interactions. Currently, notable apps available on ChatGPT include Spotify, Canva, DoorDash, Figma, Zillow, Booking.com, and Expedia. Recently, an Apple Music app was integrated, allowing users to discover new music, build playlists, and manage their music collections seamlessly within the ChatGPT environment.
