OpenAI launches apps inside of ChatGPT

OpenAI has introduced an exciting new feature that allows developers to create applications directly within ChatGPT. Beginning Monday, users will be able to interact with various applications from well-known companies such as Spotify, Figma, Coursera, Zillow, and Canva right from their ChatGPT experience. The announcement was made during OpenAI’s annual developer conference, DevDay 2025, where CEO Sam Altman emphasized the goal of enhancing productivity and creativity for users. He stated, "We want ChatGPT to be a great way for people to make progress, to be more productive, more inventive, to learn faster, to do whatever they’re trying to do in their lives better." Altman described the new applications as a means to foster a new wave of interactive, adaptive, and personalized experiences that users can engage with through conversation. This launch marks OpenAI's latest effort to cultivate an ecosystem of applications surrounding its flagship AI tool. Unlike previous initiatives, such as the GPT Store that required users to navigate a separate app marketplace, this new feature integrates applications directly into ChatGPT’s responses. This enhancement not only improves app distribution for developers but also enriches the user experience. For instance, users can simply say, "Figma, turn this sketch into a workable diagram," to invoke the Figma application, or request learning resources by asking, "Coursera, can you teach me something about machine learning?" In a demonstration of Zillow’s application, users were able to search for apartments within specific price ranges, with ChatGPT presenting an interactive map and offering detailed information on each listing. Additionally, ChatGPT will proactively suggest relevant apps based on user requests. For example, if someone inquires about creating a party playlist, ChatGPT might bring up the Spotify app within the conversation. The underlying technology driving this integration is the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which enables developers to link their data sources to AI systems. The new ChatGPT apps can also initiate actions and showcase a fully interactive user interface within the chatbot’s responses. Some applications are even capable of displaying videos directly in ChatGPT, with the ability to be tailored according to user requests. Furthermore, existing subscribers can easily log into their accounts to access specific features within ChatGPT. Looking ahead, Altman indicated that OpenAI plans to introduce monetization options for apps within ChatGPT, including through the newly launched Instant Checkout feature.
