OpenAI’s GPT-5 is here

OpenAI has officially introduced GPT-5, its latest flagship AI model, which is set to revolutionize the functionality of ChatGPT. Released on Thursday, this model marks OpenAI's first 'unified' AI system, seamlessly integrating the reasoning capabilities of its previous o-series with the rapid response features characteristic of the GPT series. This advancement heralds a transformative chapter for both ChatGPT and OpenAI, emphasizing the company's ambition to create AI systems that function more as agents than mere chatbots. Unlike its predecessor GPT-4, which focused on delivering smart responses across a range of inquiries, GPT-5 empowers ChatGPT to undertake an array of tasks for users. These include everything from generating software applications to managing calendars and creating detailed research briefs. OpenAI has made it easier for users to interact with this model by introducing a real-time router that intelligently determines the best way to respond—whether that means providing quick answers or taking additional time for more thoughtful responses. During a recent press briefing, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman proclaimed GPT-5 as 'the best model in the world' and described it as a significant milestone on the path to achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI). 'Having something like GPT-5 would have been unimaginable at any previous time in history,' Altman stated, highlighting the model's potential impact. Starting Thursday, GPT-5 will be the default model for all free users of ChatGPT, a move that reflects OpenAI's commitment to making advanced AI accessible to a broader audience. Nick Turley, OpenAI’s VP of ChatGPT, emphasized that this decision aims to provide free users with access to a reasoning model for the very first time, moving away from previous practices that restricted these models behind a paywall. The anticipation surrounding GPT-5 is palpable, as it is one of OpenAI's most awaited launches since ChatGPT first gained widespread attention in 2022. The model has already amassed over 700 million weekly users, reaching nearly 10% of the global population, and its performance will be closely monitored by stakeholders in Silicon Valley, Wall Street, and regulatory bodies. OpenAI asserts that GPT-5 is state-of-the-art across multiple domains, surpassing leading AI models from competitors such as Anthropic and Google DeepMind in key benchmarks. While it slightly underperforms in some areas, it excels particularly in coding tasks, a capability termed 'vibe coding.' For instance, on the SWE-bench Verified test, GPT-5 scored 74.9%, edging out Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.1, which scored 74.5%. In healthcare-related queries, GPT-5 demonstrates a lower hallucination rate of just 1.6%, significantly better than its earlier models, which recorded rates of 12.9% and 15.8%. OpenAI aims to enhance the model's proactive ability to flag health concerns and assist users with medical inquiries. Additionally, GPT-5 is designed to be safer than its predecessors, exhibiting lower rates of deception and better distinguishing between harmful and harmless requests. Users will also notice enhanced customization options with four new response styles: Cynic, Robot, Listener, and Nerd, allowing for a more tailored interaction. For ChatGPT subscribers, usage limits will vary, with higher tiers receiving more extensive access to GPT-5 and the advanced GPT-5 Pro version. Developers can expect GPT-5 to roll out in three sizes—gpt-5, gpt-5-mini, and gpt-5-nano—offering flexibility in performance and response length. The launch of GPT-5 follows a busy week for OpenAI, which also released an open-weight reasoning model, gpt-oss, for free download, demonstrating the company's ongoing commitment to innovation in AI technology. As the AI landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how GPT-5 will be integrated into real-world applications and whether it will indeed set a new standard for AI capabilities.
