OpenAI releases GPT-5.5, bringing company one step closer to an AI ‘superapp’

On Thursday, OpenAI announced the launch of its latest AI model, GPT-5.5, which the company touts as its most advanced and user-friendly offering to date. According to OpenAI's co-founder and president, Greg Brockman, this new algorithm boasts enhanced capabilities across various domains, bringing the company closer to realizing their vision of a comprehensive AI "superapp." During a press briefing, Brockman emphasized that this model represents a significant advancement in achieving more intuitive and agentic computing. He stated, "This model is a real step forward towards the kind of computing that we expect in the future — but it is one step, and we expect to see many in the future." He added that GPT-5.5 is designed to be a faster, more efficient thinker, providing greater AI potential for both businesses and consumers. The concept of a "superapp" has been a key focus for OpenAI, aiming to merge functionalities from ChatGPT, Codex, and an AI browsing tool into a single, versatile application that serves enterprise customers. Interestingly, the idea of such an all-encompassing app has also been championed by Elon Musk, who envisions transforming X (formerly Twitter) into a similar platform. OpenAI has maintained a rapid release schedule, with GPT-5.5 following the launch of its previous model just a month earlier. Staff members have indicated that this trend of frequent updates will likely continue, with significant improvements anticipated in both the short and medium term. Jakub Pachocki, OpenAI's chief scientist, remarked that recent advancements have been surprisingly slow, hinting at a promising future for AI development. The capabilities of GPT-5.5 extend to various sectors, including foundational enterprise tasks such as coding and knowledge work, as well as more experimental applications in mathematics and scientific research. OpenAI presented data indicating that this model outperforms its predecessors, as well as competing models from companies like Google and Anthropic. The rivalry with Anthropic remains a frequent topic of discussion, and during the briefing, a reporter inquired whether GPT-5.5 would rival Mythos, a cybersecurity tool recently launched by Anthropic. OpenAI's technical staff member, Mia Glaese, responded, highlighting that GPT-5.5 will significantly influence their digital defense strategies. Mark Chen, OpenAI's chief research officer, noted that the new model excels in technical and scientific research workflows, asserting its potential to assist expert scientists in making breakthroughs, particularly in areas like drug discovery, which has garnered increased attention in recent years. GPT-5.5 is now widely accessible, with rollout to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users in ChatGPT, while the Pro version is being integrated for Pro, Business, and Enterprise customers.
