OpenAI announces GPT-5.5, its latest artificial intelligence model

This announcement follows closely on the heels of the release of GPT-5.4, highlighting the rapid advancements characterizing the AI industry. During a press briefing, OpenAI President Greg Brockman emphasized the model's ability to tackle ambiguous problems with minimal direction. "What sets this model apart is its capacity to discern what actions are necessary next, even when faced with unclear challenges," Brockman noted. He envisions GPT-5.5 as a foundational tool that could redefine how we interact with computers and conduct computational tasks. Anthropic's recent model, Claude Mythos Preview, has drawn considerable attention from investors and industry insiders alike. While the model does not surpass the company's critical cybersecurity risk threshold that could lead to severe harm, it does fall into the 'High' risk category, indicating it may amplify existing risks. Mia Glaese, OpenAI's vice president of research, assured that extensive third-party testing and red teaming for potential cyber and biological risks were conducted before the rollout. This development comes amid growing concerns about the cybersecurity implications of AI technology, especially following Anthropic's decision to limit the release of its Mythos model due to its potential to uncover software vulnerabilities. Starting Thursday, GPT-5.5 will be available to OpenAI's paid subscribers, including Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users, within both ChatGPT and the coding assistant Codex. The company also indicated that the model will soon be accessible through its application programming interface, though this will require additional safety measures.
