OpenAI launched GPT-5, expands access to free and paid ChatGPT users

OpenAI has officially launched GPT-5, marking a significant milestone in the realm of artificial intelligence. Revealed during a live event on Thursday, this cutting-edge model showcases substantial enhancements in reasoning, coding, and creative writing skills. From today, users who utilize the free version of ChatGPT, along with numerous paid subscribers, will have access to GPT-5. Meanwhile, enterprise and educational clients are anticipated to receive access by next week. OpenAI has indicated that users who pay for the service will enjoy increased usage limits. CEO Sam Altman hailed GPT-5 as a "major upgrade," designed to provide a more expert-like conversational experience. This latest model boasts quicker response times, improved accuracy, and a reduced tendency to fabricate information compared to its predecessors. Notably, GPT-5 can autonomously determine when to take additional time to process questions, rather than depending on users to select a specific AI mode. In conjunction with the launch, OpenAI has introduced four new chatbot personalities—Cynic, Robot, Listener, and Nerd—available in a “research preview.” These personalities allow users to tailor their interactions with ChatGPT to better suit their preferences. One of the standout features of GPT-5 is its focus on software development. OpenAI showcased its ability to swiftly create a fully functional web application complete with games and interactive elements based on simple user instructions. Early adopters, including startups like Lovable and Anysphere, have reported significant improvements in the model's ability to generate, fix, and maintain code. As the tech landscape evolves, OpenAI is emphasizing GPT-5’s potential impact on software development. With an increasing number of tech firms and startups leveraging AI tools for coding assistance, a new trend described as "vibe coding" is emerging. Sam Altman noted that this shift will play a crucial role in GPT-5’s influence, suggesting that the notion of "software on demand" will characterize this new phase of artificial intelligence. The release of GPT-5 comes amid intensifying competition from rivals in both the United States and China. Companies such as Google, Anthropic, xAI (established by Elon Musk), and DeepSeek are advancing their own sophisticated models. Additionally, Meta has reportedly been expanding its AI workforce, including hiring former OpenAI employees. To maintain its competitive advantage, OpenAI has secured billions in funding to bolster its model development, data centers, and computing infrastructure. Furthermore, discussions are underway regarding a stock sale that could value the company at approximately $500 billion, according to reports from Bloomberg.
