OpenAI's pitch to nervous software companies: Work with us, not against us

In a week marked by turmoil for software companies, OpenAI is reaching out with a compelling proposal: collaborate rather than compete. On Thursday, the organization introduced "Frontier," a new enterprise-focused platform aimed at enhancing existing ChatGPT enterprise capabilities and supported by a dedicated team of Forward Deployed Engineers. Frontier is designed to empower agents with increased autonomy across various systems, moving beyond the confines of isolated tasks. Fidji Simo, OpenAI's CEO of Applications, highlighted during a pre-announcement call that adaptation to AI is essential for software companies. "Those who embrace AI will discover that Frontier presents a tremendous opportunity," she stated. This announcement comes in the wake of a significant stock market decline for software companies, triggered by Anthropic’s launch of a tool that performs clerical tasks for legal professionals. Amidst growing skepticism about the future of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), Simo reassured stakeholders that Frontier is not intended to undermine existing software businesses. "We’re not aiming to create every AI agent that companies require—far from it," she remarked. "That’s why our platform enables third-party software firms to deploy their agents on top of our infrastructure." The design of Frontier was influenced by Simo's discussions with software companies prior to her joining OpenAI's leadership team in May. Many inquired if OpenAI could create a platform that simplifies the integration process, allowing them to deploy agents via OpenAI's extensive enterprise connections. Barret Zoph, OpenAI’s General Manager for B2B, emphasized that Frontier aims to help companies unlock the full potential of current models, which is challenging with generic solutions. "We are fundamentally transitioning agents into genuine AI coworkers," he explained. OpenAI is among a host of companies rushing to develop agent-based systems. Just last month, Anthropic introduced an agent-based tool for automating complex white-collar tasks. Additionally, a former engineer from xAI recently revealed that the company, founded by Elon Musk, is working on human emulators to streamline white-collar labor. Details on Frontier’s revenue potential remain undisclosed, though OpenAI is in urgent need of new income streams, facing approximately $1.4 trillion in data center commitments over the upcoming year. They also recently announced plans to introduce advertisements in lower-tier versions of ChatGPT. Currently, Frontier is accessible to a select group of customers, with plans for broader availability soon, though pricing information has yet to be revealed. The platform is built on open standards, facilitating compatibility with agents developed either internally or by third-party vendors, including competitors.
