OpenAI has launched a new iteration of its image generation tool, ChatGPT Images, which offers improved instruction adherence, enhanced editing precision, and image generation speeds that are up to four times faster. This updated model, named GPT-Image-1.5, is now available to all ChatGPT users and through the API, starting today. This announcement marks a significant step in the ongoing rivalry with Google's Gemini, following a leaked internal memo where OpenAI CEO Sam Altman declared a 'code red' situation. The memo outlined strategies to reclaim OpenAI's status as the leader in artificial intelligence, especially after Google began capturing market share with its Gemini 3 and the recently launched Nano Banana Pro, both of which have excelled in various benchmarks. Despite OpenAI's recent launch of GPT-5.2, claimed to be its most sophisticated model for developers and professionals, Google continues to hold a competitive edge. Originally, OpenAI had intended to introduce a new image generator in early January, but the timeline was expedited due to the competitive landscape. GPT-Image-1.5 arrives at a crucial time as image and video generation tools transition from mere prototypes to production-ready solutions. Similar to Google’s Nano Banana Pro, this update enriches ChatGPT Images with advanced post-production capabilities, allowing for detailed editing controls that ensure visual consistency across elements such as facial likeness, lighting, and color tone. One notable improvement is the model's ability to handle specific editing requests more effectively. Unlike previous models that often reinterpreted entire images upon receiving an instruction like 'adjust the facial expression,' the new version aims to maintain consistency throughout edits. Additionally, OpenAI has revamped the user experience by introducing a dedicated section for image editing within the ChatGPT sidebar, designed to function like a creative studio. According to Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of applications, the new interface will facilitate easier image creation that aligns with users' visions, alongside offering inspiration from trending prompts and preset filters. Beyond the image generator, OpenAI is enhancing the ChatGPT experience by integrating more visual elements into search queries. This initiative aims to present clear visuals with reliable sources, which could aid users in various tasks including measurement conversions and sports score checks. Simo emphasized the importance of visuals in storytelling, stating, 'When visuals tell a story better than words alone, ChatGPT should include them.' He also highlighted the goal of making tools more accessible, bridging the gap between users' ideas and their execution.
