OpenAI is stepping up its efforts to attract enterprise clients with the release of new capabilities for its Codex tool, designed to enhance its applicability across various professional settings. On Tuesday, the AI company introduced a suite of features that aims to broaden the tool's functionality beyond its traditional software engineering roots. In a recent blog post, OpenAI shared insights from an internal report that highlights the growing adoption of Codex, which now boasts over 5 million weekly active users—an impressive increase of more than six times since the desktop app's debut in February. While developers continue to be the primary user demographic, knowledge workers have emerged as a significant segment, now accounting for about 20% of users and expanding at a rate more than three times faster than their developer counterparts. To further engage this expanding user base, OpenAI launched six specialized plug-ins tailored for distinct job functions, including data analytics, creative production, sales, product design, equity investing, and investment banking. These plug-ins, accessible within the Codex app, come equipped with integrations, instructions, and contextual support, enabling the tool to simulate tasks related to specific roles. Designed for immediate usability, these plug-ins are expected to improve in effectiveness as users customize them to fit their unique workflows. This new offering follows a similar initiative by Anthropic, which introduced its Enterprise Agents program earlier this year. OpenAI's traditional consumer-focused approach had previously delayed its outreach to enterprise users, with plugin support for Codex only becoming available in March. In addition to the plug-ins, OpenAI rolled out a new Sites feature that allows users to present their work as an interactive website rather than just a static local file. This feature is being developed in collaboration with partners like Wix, Base44, Replit, Lovable, Figma, and Emergent, with plans to expand the partner ecosystem further. Moreover, the introduction of an Annotations feature will enable users to specify parts of documents or files within Codex, facilitating more precise commands and contextual operations. These enterprise-focused enhancements come shortly after OpenAI announced a joint venture aimed at enterprise clients, known as the OpenAI Deployment Company, which has secured over $4 billion in funding from global investment firms. This initiative is geared towards embedding OpenAI's tools more deeply into business infrastructures worldwide. Denise Dresser, OpenAI's Chief Revenue Officer, emphasized the evolving capabilities of AI in contributing to meaningful work within organizations. "The challenge now is helping companies integrate these systems into the infrastructure and workflows that power their businesses," she stated during the launch.
