In a strategic move to enhance its coding tools, OpenAI has officially released a desktop application for Codex, its advanced language model designed for coding tasks. Previously, Codex was accessible only through a command line interface (CLI) on the web or via integrated development environments (IDEs) through extensions. This new macOS application positions OpenAI to compete more effectively with Anthropic’s Claude Code, which has already established a presence on the macOS platform. The introduction of the desktop app is tailored to streamline the management of multiple coding agents simultaneously, enabling users to run parallel tasks that may extend over several hours. OpenAI argues that the CLI and IDE extensions are insufficient for this type of comprehensive task management. Within the app, users can organize their agents by project, allowing them to work on multiple initiatives concurrently. To mitigate potential conflicts during coding, Codex agents come equipped with worktrees. Additionally, the application supports Skills—essentially folders containing instructions and resources that enhance functionality. Users have the ability to set up Automations that execute based on a user-defined schedule, further optimizing their workflow. From hands-on experience with Codex, it appears to be a capable tool, despite OpenAI lagging a few months behind Anthropic in product development. To accelerate its competitive edge, OpenAI has implemented a familiar strategy: increasing usage limits while maintaining similar pricing structures. As of today, the rate limits for Codex are set to double across various plans including Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu. Furthermore, OpenAI is offering Codex to ChatGPT Free and Go subscribers for a limited period, although specific rate limits for these plans have not been disclosed.
