OpenAI has officially launched its new Record Mode feature for ChatGPT Plus users on macOS, following a gradual rollout that began with Team users last month. This advanced functionality, designed for note-taking, transcription, and summarization, is now accessible globally through the ChatGPT desktop application on macOS devices. Originally announced in June, Record Mode aims to enhance user productivity by capturing system audio directly from computers during meetings, brainstorming sessions, or voice memos. A standout aspect of this tool is its ability to operate discreetly, recording audio without needing to join meetings as an active participant. To utilize this feature, Plus subscribers must update their ChatGPT app on macOS and provide the necessary permissions for microphone and system audio access. An intuitive record button is located at the bottom of the chat interface, allowing users to start recordings that can last up to 120 minutes. Users can also pause and resume recordings as required. Once the audio is captured, it is uploaded to OpenAI's servers for transcription and summarization. The transformed content is displayed as interactive canvases, which users can edit, share, or convert into emails and detailed summaries through ChatGPT. OpenAI confirmed the global availability of Record Mode for macOS Plus users via a post on X, though it remains unavailable for Windows users, with no timeline for a potential release. Currently, Record Mode supports only the English language, but OpenAI is actively working on expanding language support in the future. Importantly, this feature is being provided at no additional cost for the time being, although pricing may be reevaluated in future updates. The feature has previously been rolled out to ChatGPT Team, Enterprise, Pro, and Edu subscribers, and was showcased in a recent YouTube demonstration, highlighting its potential to streamline workflows through automatic meeting documentation.
