OpenAI launches ChatGPT for personal finance, will let you connect bank accounts

OpenAI has taken a significant leap into personal finance with the introduction of innovative tools designed for ChatGPT Pro subscribers in the United States. As of Friday, users can link their bank accounts and pose a variety of financial inquiries, ranging from analyzing spending habits to planning for future investments. In collaboration with Plaid, a financial connection service, OpenAI enables users to connect to over 12,000 financial institutions, including major names like Schwab, Fidelity, Chase, Robinhood, American Express, and Capital One. Once connected, users will gain access to a comprehensive dashboard showcasing their portfolio performance, spending patterns, subscriptions, and upcoming bills. This launch follows OpenAI's recent acquisition of the team behind personal finance startup Hiro, which received backing from notable firms such as Ribbit, General Catalyst, and Restive. While OpenAI acknowledged the Hiro team's contributions to the development of these tools, it did not clarify the extent of their involvement. To access these financial features, users can simply select the “Get started” option under “Finances” in the sidebar or type “@Finances, connect my accounts” during a ChatGPT conversation. The AI will then guide them through the account linking process via Plaid. OpenAI has also indicated plans to integrate Intuit in the near future, which will enhance the tool's capabilities, allowing users to analyze tax implications of stock sales or assess credit card approval chances. Remarkably, over 200 million users engage with ChatGPT for financial inquiries every month. The company also highlighted the advancements in its new GPT-5.5 model, which boasts improved contextual reasoning—an essential feature for accurately addressing finance-related questions. OpenAI has collaborated with financial experts to establish benchmarks aimed at refining the AI's handling of personal finance topics. With this new integration, users can receive tailored responses to inquiries such as, “I feel like I’ve been spending more lately. What’s changed?” or “Can you help me formulate a plan to buy a house in my area within the next five years?” Users have the ability to manage their account connections through the Settings menu, and if they choose to disconnect, any synced financial data will be purged from ChatGPT within 30 days. Additionally, users can review and delete financial memories directly from the Finances page. Recognizing the sensitive nature of inquiries related to health, finance, and personal matters, AI developers are increasingly focusing on specialized products for these areas. OpenAI and competitors like Anthropic have also introduced health-focused tools, while Perplexity recently launched a financial research product utilizing its Computer agent. The new personal finance tools from OpenAI will be accessible via ChatGPT on both web and iOS platforms for Pro users, with plans to enhance the offerings based on user feedback before expanding to Plus subscribers.
