OpenAI bets on India with cheapest ChatGPT plan at $4.6 before global rollout

OpenAI has officially announced the launch of a new subscription plan in India, priced at 399 rupees (approximately $4.57) per month. This offering, known as ChatGPT Go, marks the company's most economical option to date, as it seeks to expand its presence in one of its largest markets by user base. The ChatGPT Go plan offers users enhanced access to the latest GPT-5 model along with various features at a more affordable rate. Nick Turley, the head of ChatGPT, shared on social media that this plan significantly increases the limits for messages, image generation, and file uploads—offering ten times more compared to the free version. Additionally, users will benefit from double the memory capacity. Turley emphasized the importance of affordability for users, stating, "Making ChatGPT more affordable has been a key ask from users! We're rolling out Go in India first and will learn from feedback before expanding to other countries." Currently, OpenAI provides two other subscription options: ChatGPT Plus, priced at 1,999 rupees per month in India (around $20 globally), and the premium ChatGPT Pro, which costs 19,900 rupees (approximately $200 internationally). Earlier this year, OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, engaged in discussions with Indian IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw about fostering a low-cost AI ecosystem in the country. Altman praised India's swift adoption of AI technologies, identifying it as a vital market for OpenAI's growth. The recent release of the GPT-5 AI model has garnered mixed feedback, with some users noting a less intuitive experience, prompting the company to reinstate access to the older GPT-4 models for subscribers seeking a different interaction.
