OpenAI has officially opened the doors for app developers interested in integrating their programs with ChatGPT. As of Wednesday, developers can submit their applications for review, marking a significant expansion of the platform's capabilities. The newly introduced app directory, quickly referred to as an 'app store,' is now accessible within ChatGPT's tools menu. In October, OpenAI revealed plans to incorporate apps into its chatbot, promising users a more diverse range of functionalities. Major services like Expedia, Spotify, Zillow, and Canva have already announced their integrations, allowing users to interact with these platforms directly through ChatGPT conversations. With this latest move, OpenAI is inviting a wider selection of developers to join the ecosystem. The company emphasized that these apps enhance the ChatGPT experience by adding context and enabling users to perform tasks such as ordering groceries, converting outlines into presentations, or searching for apartments. Currently, OpenAI's Apps SDK is in beta, offering developers a toolkit to craft unique experiences for ChatGPT users. Once developers finalize their applications, they can submit them to the OpenAI Developer platform to monitor the approval process. The company anticipates that several approved apps will begin launching within ChatGPT over the next year. This initiative represents a pivotal development for OpenAI, aiming to enrich the app ecosystem and provide users with compelling reasons to engage more deeply with the platform.
