OpenAI has hardware prototypes, plan device reveal in 2 years or less

OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, announced on Friday that the company has developed its initial hardware prototypes, signaling a significant step forward in their ambitious plans for AI devices. "Finally, we have the first prototypes," Altman expressed in a video shared by the Emerson Collective, a venture investing in innovative entrepreneurs. He described the progress as "jaw dropping good" and expressed his excitement about the project. Altman made these remarks during a discussion alongside Jony Ive, the former Apple design chief, and Laurene Powell Jobs, the founder of Emerson Collective and widow of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. OpenAI's acquisition of Ive's startup, io, for $6.4 billion in equity earlier this year marked a crucial moment, as they aim to create groundbreaking AI technology. Ive has taken on a significant role in designing the new hardware. Although details about the device remain scarce, Ive hinted at a potential reveal within the next two years. He acknowledged the unpredictability inherent in hardware development, stating, "In large companies that value predictability, leaders get really uncomfortable with ambiguity." While Altman refrained from specifying the exact nature of OpenAI's hardware, he emphasized a desire to create a product that offers a more serene user experience compared to the chaotic nature of smartphones. "Imagine a vibe that is not like walking through Times Square, but rather enjoying peace and calm in a beautiful cabin by a lake," he said. He further explained that the forthcoming smart AI device would enhance user experience over extended periods, filtering distractions and only alerting users to significant notifications. The device is envisioned as having the capability to remember everything a user has thought, read, or said. The tech community is keenly observing OpenAI's hardware initiatives, especially with competitors like Amazon, Google, and Meta having introduced AI-focused devices that have yet to make a substantial impact. A successful launch from OpenAI, known for its widely used ChatGPT, could potentially disrupt the hardware industry and pose a threat to established giants like Apple. Notably, Apple has not yet introduced a dedicated AI design and has faced challenges in improving its long-standing AI voice assistant, Siri, with significant updates now postponed until 2026. Additionally, OpenAI has recently entered into an agreement with Foxconn, the manufacturer behind many consumer electronics, including those for Apple. However, the focus of this partnership appears to be on building AI infrastructure rather than on direct device manufacturing.
