OpenAI is building an AI jobs platform that could rival Microsoft’s LinkedIn

OpenAI has revealed plans to create an AI-focused job platform aimed at enhancing AI literacy and expanding its suite of AI applications for both consumers and businesses. Dubbed the "OpenAI Jobs Platform," this initiative is designed to connect skilled job seekers with employers, potentially positioning OpenAI as a competitor to LinkedIn, which is owned by Microsoft. In a recent blog post, Fidji Simo, the CEO of applications and former head of Instacart, shared insights about the platform. She emphasized that it will not only cater to large corporations but also assist local businesses and governments in sourcing the AI talent needed to better serve their communities. While specific details remain sparse, a company spokesperson indicated that the platform is expected to launch by mid-2026. In conjunction with the jobs platform, OpenAI is set to roll out a new certification program through its "OpenAI Academy." This online learning initiative will teach employees how to effectively incorporate AI into their work. This move may directly compete with LinkedIn’s learning offerings, which provide various courses and certifications across multiple disciplines. Simo elaborated on the Academy, stating, "We’re going to expand the Academy by offering certifications for different levels of AI fluency, from basic AI usage to advanced roles in AI-custom jobs and prompt engineering." The educational program will leverage ChatGPT’s Study mode, transforming the chatbot into a teaching assistant that engages users with questions and feedback. OpenAI aims to certify 10 million Americans by 2030, collaborating with organizations like Walmart to integrate these certifications into their training programs. This announcement comes at a time when concerns about AI's impact on the job market are rising, with prominent figures like Salesforce's Marc Benioff citing layoffs attributed to AI advancements. Acknowledging the potential disruptions caused by AI, Simo stated that the landscape of jobs and companies will evolve, necessitating adaptation. However, she expressed optimism about empowering individuals with AI skills to enhance their economic prospects. Research from labor market analytics firm Lightcast has shown that roles requiring AI competencies tend to offer higher wages compared to those that do not. These initiatives align with OpenAI's commitment to fostering AI literacy, particularly in collaboration with governmental efforts. Recently, OpenAI has strengthened its ties to Washington, launching "OpenAI for Government" and securing a contract worth up to $200 million with the U.S. Department of Defense. Additionally, OpenAI is involved in the Stargate project, a $500 billion initiative focused on bolstering AI infrastructure in the country over the next four years. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has also engaged with U.S. leadership to discuss responsible AI development and its implications for education and progress.
