In a significant move to strengthen its presence in India, OpenAI has introduced a new subscription tier for its ChatGPT application. Launched on Monday, this plan, dubbed ChatGPT 'Go,' is priced at just ₹399 per month, a stark reduction from the ₹1,999 monthly fee for the ChatGPT 'Plus' tier. This new offering not only makes the service more accessible but also incorporates support for Unified Payments Interface (UPI), catering to the preferences of Indian users. According to Nick Hurley, the global head of ChatGPT, this pricing structure allows subscribers to enjoy up to ten times the volume of queries and image generation per day. However, features like priority access during peak times and new updates will still be exclusive to the Plus and Pro tiers. OpenAI's strategic decision comes amidst growing recognition of India as a key market for the company. Co-founder and CEO Sam Altman expressed optimism about India's potential, stating that the country might soon become OpenAI's largest market by volume. The company is collaborating with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on AI education initiatives and partnering with local developers to enhance awareness and integration of AI services across the nation. Altman highlighted the remarkable integration of AI in Indian users' lives and businesses, emphasizing OpenAI's commitment to making AI more affordable and accessible. This new tier is particularly noteworthy as it contrasts with the pricing of other AI subscription plans, such as Google’s 'AI Pro' at ₹1,950 and Microsoft’s Copilot Pro at ₹2,000 per month. This announcement follows a series of impactful releases from OpenAI, including ChatGPT for students and the latest GPT-5 foundational model. With around 700 million users globally, India stands out as the second-largest consumer base for OpenAI, positioned to lead in user volume as the company aims for over 1 billion active monthly users. As the competition in AI heats up, industry experts recognize OpenAI's ChatGPT as a frontrunner in conversational and reasoning models. Anushree Verma, a senior director-analyst at Gartner, noted that ChatGPT's strong reputation among consumers gives it a distinct advantage in the market. With the rise of consumer-focused AI applications, India is poised to become a central figure in the race for AI supremacy among major tech firms.
