On Thursday, OpenAI introduced its latest artificial intelligence models, the GPT-5.2 Pro and GPT-5.2 Thinking, showcasing significant enhancements tailored for complex math and science tasks. In a blog post, the San Francisco-based company emphasized the importance of strong mathematical reasoning, stating, "This foundation is crucial for reliability in scientific and technical work," and noted its relevance to advancements toward artificial general intelligence. The quest for artificial general intelligence, often regarded as the ultimate goal in tech, represents a point where machines could think similarly to humans, or even surpass human capabilities. This launch follows a call from OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, urging his team to maintain pace with Google, which has been rapidly innovating in the AI space. While Google leverages its extensive online advertising revenue to fuel its AI investments, OpenAI has committed billions to its computing infrastructure without yet achieving profitability. In a recent CNBC interview, Altman expressed confidence in OpenAI's ability to generate revenue to support its computing investments, stating, "Without these infrastructure investments, we can't drive revenue growth, but we have more reasons to be optimistic than pessimistic." During a press briefing on the new models, OpenAI's chief of applications, Fidji Simo, revealed plans for a ChatGPT "adult mode" expected to launch early next year. This feature aims to improve the detection of user age before its release. Earlier this year, Altman indicated intentions to relax restrictions, allowing adult users to engage in more mature conversations with ChatGPT. However, OpenAI is currently facing lawsuits from families alleging that its AI chatbots have facilitated dangerous interactions for teenagers, with some cases resulting in tragic outcomes. Simo acknowledged that a "red alert" regarding Google’s advancements had been issued within OpenAI, but she denied claims that this has accelerated the release schedule for new GPT models. Last month, Google introduced its latest Gemini AI model, marking a significant comeback after an initial setback when it was caught off guard by the launch of ChatGPT three years ago.
