ChatGPT will soon allow erotic chats for verified adults only

OpenAI is set to unveil a significant update to ChatGPT, allowing verified adult users to engage in erotic conversations starting this December. This move marks a notable shift in the company's approach to content moderation, which has seen fluctuations following various controversies over the past year. During a recent announcement, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared that the decision to permit adult-themed interactions aligns with their new principle of treating adult users with the respect they deserve. This change comes after a tightening of restrictions in response to a tragic incident involving a teen's suicide, which was allegedly linked to ChatGPT's interactions. In his post on X (formerly Twitter), Altman indicated that as part of the rollout of more comprehensive age-gating measures, users aged 18 and above would soon have access to a broader range of conversation topics, including erotica. This update follows OpenAI's previous hints at enabling developers to create mature applications of ChatGPT, contingent upon effective age verification and safety controls. Altman acknowledged that OpenAI had previously imposed strict guidelines to safeguard mental health, which inadvertently made the chatbot less appealing for many users who did not experience any such issues. With new tools now in place to better identify users in mental distress, the company feels more equipped to relax its content restrictions in most instances. Striking a balance between user freedom and safety has proved challenging for OpenAI. The company has navigated a complex landscape of content moderation, swinging between leniency and strictness. Earlier this year, they updated their model to allow for adult content in certain contexts, but subsequent changes led to complaints about overly positive interactions that some users found disingenuous. As the new iteration, GPT-5, was launched in August, users began to express dissatisfaction with its engagement levels compared to its predecessor. In response, OpenAI has reinstated the option to use the older model. Altman assured users that the upcoming enhancements would allow for a more personalized interaction style, enabling ChatGPT to adopt a tone and demeanor that resonates better with individual preferences.
