OpenAI’s smartphone may skip Qualcomm for MediaTek chips: Report

OpenAI, the company renowned for its AI chatbot ChatGPT, is reportedly venturing into the smartphone market with a device powered by artificial intelligence. To accelerate this initiative, OpenAI is said to have formed a collaboration with the Taiwanese semiconductor company MediaTek, which will provide the essential chips for this innovative smartphone. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has suggested that the partnership aims to develop chips tailored for AI functionalities and future-proof the devices with 6G technology capabilities. This move could pose a significant challenge to Qualcomm, which currently holds a dominant position in the premium chipset arena with around 60% market share. As the demand for agentic AI smartphones rises—devices capable of performing tasks autonomously—OpenAI's vast user base, including 900 million weekly active users of ChatGPT, makes this new venture potentially appealing to consumers.
