OpenAI is reportedly gearing up to unveil a series of innovative consumer devices in collaboration with Jony Ive, the former design head at Apple and founder of LoveFrom. According to sources from The Information, this partnership between Ive and OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, aims to create a variety of AI-driven products, including smart glasses, a smart speaker, and a digital voice recorder. One of the intriguing concepts under development is an AI pin, although Ive has previously expressed concerns regarding body-worn technology. The initial product is anticipated to be an unobtrusive, pocket-sized device without a screen, similar in concept to a smart speaker. Altman has described this device as the 'third core device' that would complement existing technology like the MacBook Pro and iPhone. In addition to the pocket device, prototypes for AI-enhanced glasses and a digital recorder are reportedly in the works, with potential release dates set for late 2026 or early 2027. While OpenAI had previously dismissed the idea of wearables, the latest reports indicate that items like eyewear and the AI pin could soon become part of their product lineup. Furthermore, OpenAI has reached out to Apple's supply chain partners, including Luxshare and Goertek, known for assembling popular products such as iPhones and Apple Watches. The collaboration has also attracted talent from Apple, with Tang Tan, OpenAI's Chief Hardware Officer and an ex-Apple design executive, encouraging employees to join by promoting a culture of reduced bureaucracy and enhanced collaboration. If these reports are confirmed, this hardware initiative would represent a bold expansion for OpenAI, moving beyond its software-centric roots and aiming to make a significant impact in the consumer electronics landscape.
