OpenAI pushes into higher education as India seeks to scale AI skills

OpenAI is making significant strides in India by partnering with prominent higher education institutions to integrate artificial intelligence into their academic frameworks. This initiative comes at a time when India is eager to expand its AI skill set and foster local talent in a landscape that ranks as one of the largest in the world. On Wednesday, OpenAI announced collaborations with six notable public and private universities, including esteemed engineering, management, medical, and design schools, with the goal of impacting over 100,000 students, faculty, and staff within the coming year. This initiative prioritizes the integration of AI into essential academic operations, highlighting OpenAI's ambition to shape the teaching, governance, and normalization of AI in one of the globe’s most extensive higher education systems. According to CEO Sam Altman, the ChatGPT chatbot has already attracted over 100 million monthly active users in India, making it the company’s second-largest user base after the United States. The timing of this announcement aligns with a broader strategy by leading AI firms to strengthen their presence in India, coinciding with the AI Impact Summit taking place in New Delhi this week. Among the initial partners are some of India’s most esteemed academic institutions, such as the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi, alongside private universities and specialized design schools. OpenAI’s partnerships will cover a wide range of disciplines, from engineering and management to healthcare and creative industries. India is rapidly becoming a critical testing ground for AI applications in education. Recently, Google reported that India leads globally in the usage of its Gemini learning tools. Similarly, Microsoft announced plans to broaden its Elevate skilling initiative in India, aiming to train educators across various educational levels, in collaboration with government agencies. The partnerships initiated by OpenAI will provide campus-wide access to its ChatGPT Edu tools, faculty training, and frameworks for responsible AI use. The focus will be on incorporating AI into fundamental academic processes, such as coding, research, analytics, and case analysis, instead of merely providing standalone tool access. Notably, the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad and Manipal Academy of Higher Education will offer OpenAI-supported certifications. In addition, OpenAI intends to collaborate with Indian ed-tech platforms like PhysicsWallah, upGrad, and HCL GUVI to broaden AI training beyond university campuses. These platforms are set to launch structured courses that cover AI fundamentals and practical applications of ChatGPT, targeting students and early-career professionals. Raghav Gupta, head of education at OpenAI India, emphasized that educational institutions are vital in bridging the gap between rapidly developing AI technologies and their practical applications, as the demand for skills evolves across various sectors. Gupta, who previously served as managing director for Coursera in Asia-Pacific, was appointed as OpenAI's head of education for India and the Asia-Pacific region last year, coinciding with the launch of a Learning Accelerator program focused on enhancing AI proficiency. This surge of educational initiatives signals a shift among AI companies, as they look beyond consumer products and corporate clients to engage with institutions that play a crucial role in shaping skills, standards, and the long-term integration of AI. For nations like India, the challenge lies not only in gaining access to AI technologies but also in determining who defines the methodologies for teaching, governing, and implementing AI at scale.
