In a decisive move, OpenAI has terminated an employee for allegedly engaging in insider trading on prediction markets, as confirmed by company representatives to Wired. The individual reportedly utilized confidential information from OpenAI while participating in trades on platforms like Polymarket. While the company has chosen not to disclose the identity of the employee, a spokesperson emphasized that such conduct breaches company policy, which strictly prohibits the use of insider information for personal profit, including activities related to prediction markets. Prediction markets, including Polymarket and Kalshi, allow users to place bets on the outcomes of real-world events. For example, users on Polymarket are currently speculating on upcoming product announcements from OpenAI slated for 2026, along with the timing of the company's potential public offering. These platforms can be lucrative, with significant sums at stake; a recent report highlighted an accountant who secured a $470,300 payout on Kalshi by betting against supporters of the cryptocurrency DOGE. Despite their financial nature, prediction markets often distance themselves from gambling terminology, choosing instead to position themselves as legitimate financial platforms. Kalshi, for instance, is a regulated exchange and recently took action against a prominent editor associated with MrBeast for similar allegations of insider trading. As of now, OpenAI has not provided further comments regarding this incident.
