OpenAI files for IPO, says AI should not concentrate power as it enters ‘third phase’ of growth

OpenAI, the renowned developer behind ChatGPT, has discreetly initiated the process for a U.S. initial public offering (IPO). The company confirmed this move on June 9, although it has yet to reveal details regarding the size or structure of the offering. OpenAI has also mentioned that the public listing may not occur immediately, citing ongoing projects that are more manageable as a private entity. This decision arrives at a time when investor interest in artificial intelligence ventures is surging. It follows a similar IPO filing by competitor Anthropic earlier in the month. Speculations suggest that OpenAI might aim for a staggering valuation of up to $1 trillion. In conjunction with the IPO news, OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman shared an expansive vision for the future of AI development. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that artificial intelligence is distributed widely rather than concentrated in the hands of a few corporations or governments. Altman drew parallels between the evolution of AI and the transformative impact of electricity in the early 20th century, asserting, "Every few generations, a new technology changes everything. This is happening again with AI." He further articulated that AI should serve as a tool to assist individuals in overcoming daily challenges, spanning areas like healthcare, education, business innovation, and scientific exploration. Altman expressed a firm belief that AI access should be universal, allowing individuals to utilize it as needed. In light of rising concerns about the dominance of a limited number of companies in the AI sector, Altman reiterated OpenAI's commitment to a more equitable distribution of power within the industry. "Our first commitment is to build AI in service of humanity," he stated. He underscored the necessity of empowering a diverse range of stakeholders rather than allowing control to be centralized. Additionally, Altman provided insights into OpenAI's timeline for integrating AI into its research process. He forecasted that by March 2028, a considerable portion of the company's research activities could be conducted with the assistance of AI systems, working alongside human researchers.
