OpenAI stops Sora videos of MLK Jr. after 'disrespectful' deepfakes

In a decisive move, OpenAI has suspended the use of its Sora video tool following the creation of inappropriate deepfake videos featuring Martin Luther King Jr. Users misused the platform to produce what the company described as "disrespectful depictions" of the iconic civil rights leader. OpenAI expressed its commitment to balancing free speech with ethical responsibilities, stating on social media that public figures and their families should have authority over the portrayal of their likenesses. To reinforce this stance, the company announced plans to enhance protections for historical figures, allowing representatives to request the removal of their likeness from Sora videos. The issue of AI deepfakes has drawn attention from other notable figures as well. Zelda Williams, daughter of the late comedian Robin Williams, recently urged individuals to stop sending her AI-generated videos of her father. Actress Scarlett Johansson has also raised concerns, accusing OpenAI of utilizing a voice similar to hers from the film "Her" in its ChatGPT product, leading to the removal of that voice from the platform. Launched at the end of September, Sora enables users to generate short, AI-driven videos from text prompts. The tool rapidly gained popularity, reaching over 1 million downloads in less than five days, outpacing the initial growth of ChatGPT. However, this swift rise has also sparked discussions about the potential for misinformation, copyright violations, and the inundation of low-quality AI-generated content flooding digital spaces.
