OpenAI is beating its own forecasts, adding more fuel to the AI investment supercycle, analysts say

OpenAI is currently outperforming its own revenue predictions, marking a significant acceleration in the company's growth trajectory that has surprised even its investors. According to a recent analysis by Barclays, led by tech analyst Ross Sandler, this unexpected expansion suggests that the ongoing investment in AI infrastructure is gaining momentum rather than slowing down, despite rising apprehensions regarding capital intensity and potential market bubbles. The analysts revealed that OpenAI's revenue is approximately 15% higher than forecasts for 2025 and 50% above projections for 2027. This positive outlook is largely based on CEO Sam Altman's assertion that the company is on track to achieve an impressive $100 billion in annual recurring revenue by 2027, a full year ahead of earlier estimates. Key factors contributing to this remarkable growth include a surge in user numbers, consistent transitions from free to paid subscriptions, and the rapid scaling of OpenAI's enterprise offerings and API services. The analysts highlighted that if ChatGPT reaches around 2 billion weekly active users by 2028, OpenAI could potentially hit the $100 billion revenue mark, contingent on the proportion of users opting for paid subscriptions. Additionally, the report pointed to new revenue opportunities such as advertising on the free tier of ChatGPT and the emerging “Agents-as-a-Service” model, which provides digital solutions for businesses. Both these avenues are expected to enhance monetization in the next couple of years, as the API business continues to gain traction. Furthermore, OpenAI's recently introduced Instant Checkout feature in ChatGPT is set to generate referral fees, adding another layer to its revenue streams. This growth in revenues indicates a rising demand for computational resources, with OpenAI's projected compute budget expected to surpass $450 billion from 2024 to 2030, alongside total commitments nearing $650 billion, some of which are set to extend beyond 2030. The analysts concluded that these indicators of growth do not hint at an impending slowdown but rather suggest a potential extension of the AI investment supercycle. "We anticipate that other labs will maintain their aggressive investment strategies," Sandler and his team noted, emphasizing that major tech companies are likely to sustain their spending levels despite growing concerns.
