OpenAI power consolidates under co-founder Greg Brockman ahead of prospective IPO

OpenAI has appointed Greg Brockman as the new leader overseeing its key projects, following the resignation of Fidji Simo, who stepped down due to ongoing health issues. Simo, a former executive at Meta and ex-CEO of Instacart, had been with OpenAI for about a year, focusing on product development and business strategies. She was diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) in 2019 and took a medical leave in April, transitioning now to a part-time advisory role. Brockman, one of OpenAI's co-founders, had already assumed Simo's product responsibilities during her absence and will continue to head the ChatGPT product line, as well as the company's go-to-market and enterprise teams. Expressing gratitude for Simo's contributions, Brockman remarked on X, "I am deeply grateful for all Fidji has done for OpenAI and to advance our mission, and for the opportunity to have worked alongside her for the past few years." As he reports directly to CEO Sam Altman, Brockman faces the critical task of generating revenue to uphold OpenAI's staggering $852 billion valuation. The company has filed confidentially for an IPO, but its public debut has been reportedly postponed until next year. OpenAI is navigating a competitive landscape marked by strong rivals like Anthropic, Google, and SpaceX, as well as various lower-cost models emerging from China. Recent reports indicate that ChatGPT's market share dipped below 50% for the first time, prompting OpenAI to intensify its promotion of the AI coding assistant, Codex. Brockman, who has been a key figure alongside Altman since the inception of OpenAI in 2015, previously showed solidarity with Altman during a brief ousting from the CEO position in 2023. Their partnership has been unwavering, even amid a high-profile legal dispute involving Elon Musk. Musk's lawsuit against Brockman and Altman, which alleged a breach of commitments to maintain OpenAI as a nonprofit, concluded with a jury ruling that favored Brockman and the company. "I think the tech we are developing is transformative," Brockman stated during his testimony. "This is going to be the most important technological shift in human history."
