OpenAI is recalibrating its approach to transforming ChatGPT into an e-commerce platform, as recent efforts have not produced the desired outcomes. The company announced this pivot on Tuesday, revealing a withdrawal from a feature that allowed users to purchase items directly through the chatbot. Initially introduced last year, the buying capabilities aimed to establish ChatGPT as a "shopping assistant," linking consumers with relevant vendors. The "Instant Checkout" feature, launched in September, encouraged users to interact with the chatbot to specify their shopping needs and add products to a virtual cart, replicating the experience of traditional e-commerce sites. However, OpenAI has acknowledged that this feature did not achieve significant success. In a blog post, OpenAI explained, "We’ve found that the initial version of Instant Checkout did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide, so we’re allowing merchants to use their own checkout experiences while we focus our efforts on product discovery." This means that while merchants can still enable the feature temporarily within ChatGPT, the standalone development of Instant Checkout is being deprioritized in favor of enhancing product discovery for users. A spokesperson confirmed that the platform will continue to support various checkout methods, including those through merchants’ own websites. Reports from The Information and CNBC indicated that OpenAI's new strategy involves allowing merchants to create their own applications within ChatGPT, directing users to their respective checkout experiences. Insights from a source mentioned that ChatGPT users were not effectively utilizing the chatbot for purchases. Additionally, a study conducted in October highlighted that e-commerce sites were not seeing substantial financial benefits from traffic generated by ChatGPT users. Rather than becoming a direct shopping portal, OpenAI is now focusing on positioning ChatGPT as a centralized source of consumer information. This shift is aimed at transforming the chatbot into a valuable research tool for online shoppers. The new shopping experience will be supported by OpenAI's Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), an open standard for e-commerce developed in collaboration with fintech leader Stripe. This protocol leverages data from participating merchants to enhance user experience. Moving forward, ChatGPT will offer more comprehensive product information, including side-by-side images and comparative metrics such as prices, features, and reviews.
