OpenAI's 'stunning admission': Maybe people don't want to book stuff inside ChatGPT

In a surprising turn of events, OpenAI has decided to step back from directly managing bookings and purchases within ChatGPT. This strategic pivot has led to a surge in the stock prices of major online travel agencies like Expedia and Booking.com, indicating a significant shift in the marketplace. Previously, OpenAI had experimented with integrating checkout features in ChatGPT, allowing users to complete transactions for hotels and products seamlessly. However, the company has now opted to move these functions to third-party applications, as outlined in a report by The Information. According to a TD Cowen research note, this change represents a noteworthy retreat from OpenAI’s initial ambitions in the commerce sector. TD Cowen analysts referred to this move as a "stunning admission," suggesting that the anticipated evolution of AI platforms becoming the primary interface for application usage may be delayed or reevaluated. It appears that OpenAI has recognized the complexities involved in handling the various aspects of commerce, including payments, cancellations, and customer service, all of which are operationally challenging and less profitable for a company primarily focused on AI model development. The responsibilities inherent in online travel agencies are substantial. These entities not only act as intermediaries in bookings but also bear legal liabilities related to customer service and the accuracy of their listings. The current travel disruptions, such as those experienced in Dubai, underscore the difficulties that come with managing travel arrangements. This is not the first time a tech giant has struggled with direct booking processes. Google previously introduced "Book on Google" in 2015, only to shut it down in 2022 due to a lack of traction. Even a company as influential as Google found the complexities of the travel booking industry to be overwhelming. Additionally, it seems consumers may prefer to complete transactions through established online travel agencies, which typically offer a wider inventory and improved conversion rates. TD Cowen’s analysis indicates that OpenAI's retreat from direct bookings could signify a shift in sentiment towards OTAs, alleviating concerns that AI might undermine these intermediaries. Following this news, Booking.com saw an increase of approximately 8%, while Expedia's shares climbed nearly 13%. As of now, OpenAI has not provided any comments regarding this development.
