OpenAI's foray into the world of online shopping has taken an unexpected turn. Following the launch of its Instant Checkout feature last year, major retailers like Etsy, Walmart, and Shopify quickly joined the initiative, allowing users to purchase products directly through the ChatGPT interface. The buzz around AI shopping agents surged, with Shopify's President describing it as a pioneering moment in e-commerce. However, after several months of operation, OpenAI has decided to pivot away from the Instant Checkout model. The company is now collaborating with retailers to develop dedicated applications within ChatGPT. This shift will redirect users to the retailers' websites for transactions, thereby granting these companies greater control over the customer journey and transaction process. Industry experts have expressed surprise at OpenAI's challenges in executing transactions. Bob Hetu, an analyst at Gartner, noted that the complexities involved in enabling smooth transactions were underestimated. OpenAI has acknowledged this by emphasizing improvements in search functionality and product discovery within ChatGPT, areas where they have seen promising user engagement. The Information first reported on this strategic shift, which has raised questions about whether the tech firms and their retail partners may have overstated the readiness of shopping bots for the market. This change also underscores the hurdles AI startups face as they attempt to disrupt a retail landscape dominated by established players like Amazon. In its competitive race against companies such as Google and Anthropic, OpenAI has rolled out numerous new features in the past year to diversify its offerings and revenue streams. As users increasingly turn to ChatGPT for product inquiries, the potential for e-commerce within the platform has become increasingly apparent. While OpenAI refines its commerce strategy, Google has been making strides as well. Recently, the tech giant updated its shopping platform to ensure real-time product information, enhancing the shopping experience and preventing common issues like out-of-stock items and pricing discrepancies. Initially, OpenAI envisioned Instant Checkout as a revolutionary step in agentic commerce, where ChatGPT would assist users not only in discovering products but also in purchasing them directly. The company planned to charge a nominal fee for each transaction but has not disclosed further financial specifics. OpenAI's early plans included facilitating purchases from U.S. Etsy sellers and integrating products from over a million Shopify merchants. However, the onboarding of merchants proved cumbersome, and there were frequent errors with Instant Checkout. As of last month, only around 30 Shopify merchants were integrated into the feature, while Walmart listed approximately 200,000 products available for purchase. Challenges arose regarding the accuracy of product data, as OpenAI could scrape retailers' websites for information, leading to outdated or incorrect availability and pricing details. Analysts have remarked that this method was insufficient for delivering a quality shopping experience. OpenAI's announcement of an Apps SDK at its recent developer conference has already led to the integration of apps from various retailers, including Instacart and Target, into ChatGPT. Shopify has confirmed that a revamped e-commerce experience is on the horizon, allowing users to discover products within ChatGPT while completing purchases directly through the merchants’ websites. Walmart's top AI executive hinted at a significant transition in OpenAI's commerce strategy, deeming Instant Checkout a temporary phase. A spokesperson from Walmart confirmed plans to integrate their AI assistant, Sparky, with ChatGPT shortly. Similarly, Etsy is developing a ChatGPT application, although the specifics of its implementation remain fluid. This new app aims to enhance retailers' control over the shopping experience and provide valuable consumer data earlier in the purchasing process. Despite mixed results so far, analysts suggest the current ChatGPT app experience is still evolving. Early data indicates that while consumers are increasingly using AI for product research, very few are completing purchases within these chat interfaces. A recent survey revealed that only 22% of users have bought products through an AI tool, although half reported making purchases after engaging with AI during their research. As OpenAI endeavors to refine its e-commerce model, industry experts believe the journey is far from over. Despite the challenges, there remains optimism about the future of AI shopping, with the understanding that no company has fully mastered this emerging market yet.
