OpenAI bets on families as ChatGPT goes deeper into households

In a significant pivot, OpenAI is expanding its target audience from individual users to families as it seeks to enhance its product offerings. Over three years since the launch of ChatGPT, the company is now on the lookout for a dedicated product manager based in San Francisco. This new role is aimed at developing experiences specifically for families, caregivers, and older adults across OpenAI’s suite of products. The job listing emphasizes the need for expertise in creating trust-sensitive consumer experiences tailored for parents and families. This strategic hiring reflects a broader trend, as data from Sensor Tower indicates an increase in ChatGPT users aged 35 and older, which rose to 31% in the second quarter of this year, up from 26% the previous year. Conversely, the percentage of users aged 18 to 24 has decreased from 34% to 29%. Notably, nearly 25% of U.S. smartphone users who are parents reported using ChatGPT in the last quarter, a rise from 16% a year prior. Ben Bajarin, CEO of Creative Strategies, remarked that this shift in focus indicates OpenAI’s intention to position its products less as tools for individual productivity and more as household technologies. This development brings with it a set of new challenges concerning trust and safety. Stephen Balkam, CEO of the Family Online Safety Institute, noted that the company’s hiring approach is a testament to its maturity and an acknowledgment that AI products designed for children require distinct safety measures compared to those intended for adults. He described this initiative as an essential response to the evolving landscape of AI usage among younger demographics. Recent research from the Family Online Safety Institute reveals a disconnect between parents' perceptions and the reality of children's engagement with generative AI. The survey, which included over 4,000 families in the U.S. and Australia, found that while 27% of U.S. parents believed their child had used generative AI in the past week, 38% of children reported using it. Balkam emphasized the need for AI companies to create products that cater specifically to younger users, advocating for robust content controls, age-appropriate experiences, and parental oversight. This shift in focus also comes at a time when AI companies are under increasing scrutiny regarding the protections they offer to younger users. OpenAI has faced lawsuits from parents asserting that ChatGPT has contributed to harmful situations involving their children. In response to these concerns, OpenAI has introduced various safety features over the past year, including parental controls for teen accounts and new measures to handle sensitive conversations. The recent hiring is aligned with OpenAI's broader initiatives to engage families, as evidenced by a workshop held with the San Antonio Spurs Community Impact organization. As OpenAI continues to evolve, it mirrors trends seen in other tech giants like Google and Apple, which have also integrated their platforms into daily family life. The demographic shift, while notable, is not exclusive to ChatGPT; users aged 25 to 34 account for a sizable portion of the audience for competing AI products as well. As AI technology becomes a shared resource across generations, industry experts predict the emergence of family plans, child profiles, and enhanced safety features to support this new era.
