OpenAI is directing its focus towards its enterprise sector as it prepares for a possible initial public offering (IPO) by the end of the year. According to sources, CEO of Applications, Fidji Simo, recently addressed employees in an all-hands meeting, emphasizing the company's commitment to enhancing productivity for businesses. Since the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, which sparked a generative AI revolution, the platform has attracted over 900 million weekly active users. However, OpenAI is now racing to expand its market presence in the enterprise space, competing against major rivals such as Google and Anthropic, the latter of which is also contemplating an IPO. Simo highlighted the potential to transform ChatGPT into a vital productivity tool, stating, "Our opportunity now is to take those 900 million users and turn them into high-compute users." The Wall Street Journal first reported on Simo's all-hands meeting. OpenAI's IPO is anticipated in the fourth quarter of this year, though the timing may vary, according to an anonymous insider. In preparation for the market debut, CFO Sarah Friar is expanding the finance team, bringing on board Ajmere Dale, the former chief accounting officer at Block, and Cynthia Gaylor, the ex-CFO of DocuSign, who will manage investor relations. Last December, OpenAI initiated a 'code red' to enhance ChatGPT amid growing competition. The company temporarily halted investments in other sectors like healthcare, shopping, and advertising to focus on this goal. Simo reiterated the urgency during the March meeting, stressing the importance of maintaining focus and executing plans effectively. OpenAI is also refining its spending objectives, having previously startled investors with ambitious infrastructure projections. Initially forecasting a $1.4 trillion expenditure, OpenAI revised its target to about $600 billion by 2030, aligning it more closely with projected revenue growth. The company expects to generate over $280 billion in revenue by 2030, with contributions from both consumer and enterprise sectors being almost equal.
