OpenAI to open massive new data centre in India: When will it be announced?

OpenAI is gearing up to establish a substantial data center in India, with an impressive capacity of at least 1-gigawatt, as reported by Bloomberg. The company is currently in search of local partnerships to facilitate the development of this facility, which is anticipated to be a significant advancement in its Stargate AI infrastructure initiative. While specific details regarding the location and timeline of the project remain unclear, there are indications that the announcement could coincide with CEO Sam Altman's visit to India this month. This large-scale data center is expected to enhance OpenAI’s ability to deliver tailored AI chatbots to users while addressing concerns about data sovereignty. In a recent post on X, Altman expressed his enthusiasm for the trip, stating, "I'm looking forward to visiting India next month. The adoption of AI in India has been remarkable to observe—ChatGPT users have increased fourfold in the past year—and we are eager to invest significantly more in the country!" OpenAI initially unveiled the Stargate project in January, collaborating with industry giants like SoftBank, Oracle, and Microsoft to develop approximately 4.5 gigawatts of capacity in the United States, with an estimated budget of around $500 billion. The company is also a key partner in similar data center ventures in Norway and the UAE. With India recognized as the second-largest market for ChatGPT globally, OpenAI has intensified its focus on the region. Last month, the company introduced its ₹399/month ChatGPT Go subscription plan for Indian users and announced plans to establish its first office in New Delhi. Prior to this office opening, OpenAI has begun recruitment in India, listing at least three job openings on its careers page. Moreover, OpenAI has partnered with the Indian AI Mission to foster the development of both large and small language models within the country. In collaboration with the Ministry of Education, the company is also providing around 500,000 free ChatGPT licenses to students and educators throughout India. In a recent blog post, OpenAI highlighted that ChatGPT has become one of the most widely utilized learning tools globally, particularly in India, which boasts the largest student population using ChatGPT, with millions relying on it for homework assistance, exam preparation, and exploring new ideas.
