OpenAI’s average compensation hits Rs 13.5 crore highlighting the cost of acquiring top AI talent

OpenAI has made headlines by achieving the highest average employee compensation among startups, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. With a workforce of around 4,000 employees, each individual is projected to receive company stock valued at approximately $1.5 million (around ₹13.5 crore) in their 2025 remuneration package. This staggering figure underscores the intense competition among companies to attract and retain top AI talent. Data compiled by Equilar reveals that OpenAI's compensation rates are a remarkable 34 times greater than those offered by other leading tech firms, highlighting the lengths to which OpenAI is going to secure its most skilled researchers and engineers. In comparison, OpenAI's compensation strategy significantly outpaces what Google offered during a similar phase of its growth. Reports indicate that the stock-based compensation OpenAI is set to provide in 2025 is over seven times higher than Google's offerings back in 2003, just prior to its initial public offering. However, this aggressive compensation approach raises concerns for companies, as they risk financial losses from their core operations due to soaring salary expenses. Furthermore, the shift to stock-based payouts could dilute ownership stakes for existing shareholders. OpenAI's case is not isolated; Meta is also reported to be attracting AI talent with lucrative pay packages amounting to hundreds of millions. Investor documents suggest that OpenAI could allocate up to $3 billion annually for stock-based compensation through 2030. Furthermore, the company has recently revised its policy, allowing employees to access stock or equity grants sooner than the previous six-month requirement, making it easier for them to benefit from these lucrative offerings.
