OpenAI to focus on 'practical adoption' in 2026, says finance chief Sarah Friar

In a recent blog post, OpenAI's CFO, Sarah Friar, announced that the company aims to make 2026 a pivotal year for the 'practical adoption' of artificial intelligence. The focus will be on bridging the gap between the advanced capabilities of AI and its everyday applications across individuals, businesses, and governments. Friar emphasized the vast potential in sectors such as healthcare, science, and enterprise, where enhanced intelligence can lead to significantly improved outcomes. She discussed OpenAI's strategy to monetize its offerings, including ChatGPT, while also ensuring the necessary computational resources to support these services. Notably, OpenAI’s computational power skyrocketed from 0.2 gigawatts in 2023 to approximately 1.9 gigawatts by 2025, mirroring a dramatic increase in the company's revenue, which surged from $2 billion to over $20 billion in the same period. Highlighting the unprecedented growth, Friar stated, "This is never-before-seen growth at such scale," and expressed confidence that increased computational power during this time would have accelerated customer adoption and revenue generation. However, this ambitious roadmap comes amid scrutiny regarding the substantial investments required to expand data center capabilities and secure the energy and components essential for such advanced technologies, which currently offer limited returns for investors. A significant partnership with Nvidia, announced in September, will see the AI chipmaker invest $100 billion to support OpenAI in deploying at least 10 gigawatts of its systems. This arrangement has raised questions, particularly after Nvidia cautioned investors that there was "no assurance" the agreement would progress to a formal contract stage. Friar acknowledged the complexities involved in securing top-tier computational resources, pointing out that commitments often need to be made years in advance. Three years ago, OpenAI depended on a single provider for its computational needs, but it has since diversified its ecosystem, allowing for more strategic planning, financing, and capacity deployment. Friar believes that as AI continues to penetrate fields like scientific research, drug discovery, energy management, and financial modeling, new economic models will emerge to sustain this growth. The blog post follows OpenAI's recent announcement about testing advertisements for some ChatGPT users in the U.S. as part of its preparations for a potential public offering this year. Friar noted, "Monetization should feel native to the experience. If it does not add value, it does not belong."
