OpenAI to publicly release GPT-5.6 AI models, ending government-requested limits

OpenAI is preparing to unveil its highly anticipated GPT-5.6 models, including Sol, Terra, and Luna, on Thursday. This announcement comes just two weeks after the company had restricted access to a select group of trusted partners at the request of the U.S. government. In a message shared on X, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed enthusiasm for the rollout, encouraging users with a simple, "Happy building." Initially announced in June, the GPT-5.6 models were designed to be released to a limited audience whose participation was coordinated with government oversight. However, OpenAI has emphasized its commitment to broad access, revealing plans to expand availability in the coming weeks. The company voiced concerns about the government’s intervention, stating, "We don't believe this kind of government access process should become the long-term default. It keeps the best tools from users, developers, enterprises, cyber defenders, and global partners who need them." This public release follows a similar move by OpenAI's competitor, Anthropic, which recently restored access to its Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models after resolving a conflict with the government. Anthropic had to suspend access due to compliance with an export control directive, which was lifted by the U.S. Department of Commerce last month. The recent shift in government policy toward AI has been notable since President Trump signed an executive order in June, which encourages AI developers to voluntarily share their advanced models for government evaluation before public release. OpenAI is currently collaborating with the government to create a structured evaluation process for future model launches. According to OpenAI, the GPT-5.6 Sol model is the company's most powerful offering to date, boasting enhanced capabilities in coding, biology, and cybersecurity. Altman confirmed on X that global preview access to these models is being rolled out, marking a significant step in making cutting-edge AI technology accessible to a wider audience.
