Google’s worst nightmare? OpenAI’s new AI browser is coming to challenge Chrome

OpenAI is on the verge of introducing a groundbreaking web browser infused with artificial intelligence, a move that could pose a significant challenge to the current leader, Google Chrome. This development comes from insights shared by sources close to the company, as reported by Reuters. The forthcoming browser aims to revolutionize user interactions on the internet by embedding AI functions directly into the browsing experience. According to two of the insiders, the browser will include a ChatGPT-style chat interface, enabling users to converse and perform tasks without the need to navigate to various websites. This innovative approach will allow AI “agents” to assist users with a variety of tasks, from filling out forms to making reservations, all within the browser itself. Built on Google’s open-source platform, Chromium, the new browser will leverage the same foundation that powers other popular browsers like Microsoft Edge and Opera. If successful, it could tap into the vast user base of ChatGPT, which reportedly has around 500 million active users weekly. Such a shift could threaten a vital revenue stream for Alphabet, as Chrome is a key source of user data that supports Google’s advertising algorithms—responsible for nearly three-quarters of the company's income. In contrast to other competitors who have opted for AI tools as browser extensions, OpenAI's decision to develop a standalone browser reflects a strategic choice to maintain comprehensive control over the data collected and its integration with OpenAI's AI systems, including the upcoming assistant known as “Operator.”
