OpenAI raises $122 billion funds ahead of IPO buzz

In a groundbreaking development, OpenAI has successfully raised an astounding $122 billion in a recent funding round, bringing its valuation to a staggering $852 billion. This significant financial boost was co-led by industry giant SoftBank, alongside investments from notable firms such as Andreessen Horowitz, D. E. Shaw Ventures, MGX, TPG, and T. Rowe Price Associates. This latest funding round also saw participation from tech titans like Amazon, Nvidia, and Microsoft. OpenAI expressed its vision in a blog post, stating, "The capital being deployed today is helping build the infrastructure layer for intelligence itself." This funding marks a major milestone as the company gears up for its anticipated initial public offering (IPO). Additionally, individual investors contributed to the substantial amount through banks, which facilitated the raising of over $3 billion. OpenAI will now feature in exchange-traded funds (ETFs) managed by ARK Invest, making it easier for a wider audience to invest indirectly in the company and its advancements in the AI sector. The organization also announced an expansion of its credit facility to approximately $4.7 billion, with support from leading global banks, including JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley. Financially, OpenAI is thriving, generating around $2 billion in monthly revenue. The company noted, "At this stage, we are growing revenue four times faster than the companies that defined the Internet and mobile eras, including Alphabet and Meta." Currently, OpenAI boasts over 900 million weekly active users and more than 50 million subscribers. In a strategic move to enhance revenue, the company is experimenting with advertising, which has already yielded more than $100 million in annual recurring revenue in just six weeks. Furthermore, OpenAI announced plans to develop a "unified AI superapp," combining the functionalities of ChatGPT, Codex, browsing, and agentic capabilities. The company emphasized, "This is not just product simplification. It is a distribution and deployment strategy. By unifying our surfaces, we can translate advances in model capability directly into user adoption and engagement."
